When purchasing a new cylinder more often than not it will come ‘keyed to differ’. Meaning if you purchase two cylinders, one for your front door and one for your back door each lock will have its own key. If you’d prefer the convenience of using the same key for each lock then you might want to consider purchasing keyed alike cylinders.
The premise behind keyed alike cylinders is simple. It gives you the freedom to use a single key to unlock a number of cylinders. For example you can use one lock to open your front door, back door, garage, and even the padlock on your shed. Using a single key helps to save time so you’ll never have to stand in the rain putting your back door key into your front door lock again!
Keyed alike cylinders don’t need to be the same type either. You can easily mix & match double cylinders with half cylinders or, rim cylinders allowing you to keep your existing locks.
Are keyed alike cylinders less secure?
It’s understandable to have concerns when it comes to protecting your home valuables, but no. Keyed alike cylinders still offer the same amount of protection as cylinders that are keyed to differ.
Can I have extra keys for a keyed alike cylinder?
Yes. The key for a keyed alike cylinder is no different to one for a keyed to differ cylinder. This means spares can quickly be made. Here at Handles at Heart we offer a key cutting service within our shop.
Can anyone copy my key?
If you misplace your key then it is possible that someone could gain a copy of it. This is why locksmiths always suggest replacing a lock under these circumstances.
Can I protect my key from being copied?
Yes, and thats all thanks to Ultion key control. Your unique keycode can’t be copied without your permission.
What is Ultion key control?
Once you register your Ultion keys it stops unauthorised copies of your key being cut. When an Ultion key centre checks your keycode through the Ultion decoding software, you receive an e-mail which mentions a shop is trying to access your keys data. You are then given the option to grant them permission.
